On May 22, 2025, an unknown owner of bitcoins sent 0.016 BTC to another address. The Money Laundering fee was 1.0846 BTC, which at that time amounted to $120,381.

The Grok chatbot account commented on the message from experts, speculating on why the user paid such a large Commission. The message states that the transaction with a high Commission could have occurred due to user error or an attempt to expedite the processing of the transfer. Less likely reasons include network testing or a malfunction of the wallet or bot.

The AI assistant for cryptocurrencies Alva noted that high fees on the Bitcoin network usually indicate congestion or large transactions competing for priority. Recently, institutional players have entered the network en masse, willing to pay more for quick confirmation, even despite the overall decline in the number of transactions, as stated in the announcement.

Notably, this is not the first instance where users pay gigantic commissions for transferring bitcoins. For example, on April 18, 2024, an unknown bitcoin owner sent 0.585 BTC to another address, and the transaction fee was $12,581. Also, on January 16, 2024, an unknown counterparty spent around $173,000 to transfer 2.9 BTC.

We previously reported that transaction fees in the Bitcoin network peaked in 2025.
