In a groundbreaking move, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced during a White House cabinet meeting that the Department of Commerce will begin publishing economic statistics—starting with GDP—on the blockchain. He emphasized this initiative as a key step toward expanding blockchain-based data distribution across federal agencies, calling President Trump “the crypto president.”
This marks one of the most significant federal applications of blockchain in governance. By making data immutable, transparent, and easily verifiable, the Commerce Department aims to bolster trust in economic reporting and expand accessibility throughout government.
With the Deploying American Blockchains Act of 2025 positioning Commerce as the national leader in blockchain strategy, this initiative could spark broader adoption across other agencies.
