Norwegian Central Bank: Not issuing CBDC for now, but future possibilities remain

This has been studied for several years. On Wednesday, the Norwegian central bank provided a phased conclusion — their domestic payment system is efficient, secure enough, with a reliable emergency mechanism, so there is no immediate need for a central bank digital currency.

However, the central bank governor Ida Wolden Bache spoke quite broadly: if in the future it becomes necessary to maintain the stability of the payment system with CBDC, they are ready to activate it at any time. She also specifically mentioned the willingness to explore this direction together with financial institutions and other central banks.

A comprehensive research report will be released in the first quarter of next year, including future work plans. It’s worth noting that the Norwegian central bank has not ruled out the possibility — future issuance is still possible, and they are continuously studying new forms of digital currencies like tokenization, while keeping an eye on international developments.

In simple terms: no rush now, but this path still needs to be watched closely.
