The Optimism Foundation recently announced a new tokenomics initiative. Starting from February 2026, 50% of the revenue generated by the superchain sequencer will be used for monthly regular repurchases of OP tokens.
In terms of data, the foundation has accumulated 5,868 ETH in sequencer revenue over the past 12 months. The initial repurchase plan will utilize 2.7k ETH of this, approximately $8 million. This fund will be used to execute repurchase operations on a monthly basis.
The proposal is scheduled for a community vote on January 22. This direct token repurchase mechanism reflects the project's long-term commitment to ecosystem development and token value. By returning a portion of protocol revenue to token holders, it not only enhances token scarcity but also provides a visible value return mechanism for ecosystem participants.
