When we discuss AI, the media often fall into the trap of “whose parameters are bigger” or “which model is stronger”—these numerical games. But if we step back from these surface-level competitions, you’ll find a deeper, more essential struggle beneath the waterline: a covert contest over how intelligence is allocated, who holds sovereignty, and how individuals can protect their autonomy. This confrontation is silent—no gunfire—but it determines how much freedom each person can gain in the AI era.
In this battle, two fundamentally different forces are shaping the future. One is the light held high on the lighthouse—cutting-edge models controlled by tech giants, representing the limits of human cognition; the other is the light in your hand—open-source, locally deployable torches, making intelligence a controllable asset. Understanding the true meaning of these two lights is essential to judging how AI will ultimately change society.

These open-source models are transforming powerful intelligence from “scarce cloud services” into “downloadable, deployable, customizable tools.” The key difference is: torches correspond to baseline capabilities accessible to the public unconditionally, not just the upper limits.
This is not merely a divergence in technical approaches but a split in power structures.
The Lighthouse Illuminates the Distance: Capabilities and Risks of Frontier Models
Lighthouse-level models fundamentally bundle three extremely scarce resources: computing power, data, and engineering systems.
Training cutting-edge models requires massive clusters of computational resources, months of training cycles, vast amounts of high-quality data, and a complete engineering infrastructure capable of transforming research into products. These investments create an almost insurmountable barrier—not something that cleverness alone can overcome, but a large industrial system. A deeper concern involves privacy and sovereignty: even with compliance promises, uploading internal data and core knowledge to the cloud remains a governance risk in sensitive fields like healthcare, finance, and government.
As more critical decision-making processes are handed over to a few model providers, systemic biases, blind spots in evaluation, and supply chain disruptions can magnify into significant societal risks. For individuals, long-term accumulated notes, emails, and private information also need a local intelligent agent—rather than entrusting a lifetime of data to a “free service.”
Open-source models turn intelligence into a production resource, not just a consumption service.
The continuous improvement of open-source model capabilities comes from two paths. One is rapid dissemination of research—cutting-edge papers, training techniques, and inference paradigms are quickly absorbed and reproduced by the community. The other is extreme engineering optimization—through quantization (8-bit/4-bit), distillation, inference acceleration, MoE (Mixture of Experts), and other techniques, making “sufficiently strong” intelligence increasingly affordable. The clear trend is: the strongest models set the capability ceiling, but “good enough” models drive widespread adoption. But open-source models are not inherently just. Their cost is the transfer of responsibility. Risks originally borne by platforms now shift to users. The more open the model, the easier it is to generate scams, malicious code, or deepfakes. Local deployment means you must handle evaluation, monitoring, prompt injection defenses, permissions, data anonymization, and model updates yourself. Moreover, many “open-source” models—more accurately, “open weights”—still have restrictions on commercial use and redistribution. When “good enough” open models are accessible to everyone, giants find it hard to maintain long-term monopoly based solely on “core capabilities” and must continue investing in breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the open ecosystem generates richer evaluation, adversarial testing, and user feedback, which in turn drives more robust and controllable frontier systems. Many innovative applications emerge within the torch ecosystem—lighthouses provide capabilities, torches provide the soil.
This is not a war between two camps but a complementary arrangement of systems: one concentrates extreme costs for upper limits, the other disperses capabilities for widespread adoption, resilience, and sovereignty. Neither can be missing. Without lighthouses, technology risks stagnation in “just optimizing cost-performance.” Without torches, society risks dependence on a few platforms monopolizing capabilities.

Cutting-edge tasks will rely on lighthouses—those requiring the strongest reasoning, frontier multimodal capabilities, cross-domain exploration, and complex scientific assistance. Key assets will be protected by torches—scenarios involving privacy, compliance, core knowledge, long-term cost stability, and offline availability. Between these, many “middle layers” will emerge: enterprise proprietary models, industry-specific customized models, distilled versions, and hybrid routing strategies (simple tasks on local, complex tasks on cloud).
This is not compromise but engineering reality: pushing the ceiling for breakthroughs, while baselines promote widespread adoption; one seeks extremes, the other reliability. The ultimate outcome will be a layered, resilient ecosystem rather than reliance on a single point.
