Vitalik Buterin Revealed Ethereum Scaling Strategy: Multidimensional Gas and the Future of Blockchain
Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Presents Detailed Analysis of the Highly Anticipated Network Scaling Program. His vision covers both immediate technological steps and ambitious long-term transformations aimed at radically increasing network performance and resilience.
Why Scaling Has Become a Critical Necessity
Ethereum faces a growing problem of state bloat — accumulation of excess data that slows down the network and increases node resource requirements. This limits the network’s ability to process more transactions without performance degradation. Buterin emphasized that solving this issue requires a systematic approach, divided into several development phases.
Glamsterdam: Short-Term Breakthrough in Throughput Expansion
In the near term, the main scaling tool will be the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade. This update introduces several key improvements:
Block-level access lists will speed up transaction verification by pre-identifying affected addresses. ePBS mechanism (encrypted separation of producers and validators) will provide more time for full block validation, preventing errors caused by rushing. Dynamic gas adjustment will be tied to actual operation execution times, ensuring fairer pricing.
Simultaneously, a reservoir mechanism will be implemented to support virtual machine compatibility with new requirements, ensuring existing contracts continue to function correctly.
Multidimensional Gas: A Revolutionary Shift in Resource Management
An innovative element of Glamsterdam will be the introduction of a multidimensional gas calculation model. Instead of a single universal gas limit, different operation types will be accounted for separately based on their impact on network resources.
A critically important innovation will be the separate accounting of state creation costs. Gas spent on deploying new contract states will no longer count toward the standard limit, allowing for larger contracts without artificial truncation. This approach will gradually evolve into full multidimensional gas pricing, providing flexibility and long-term economic sustainability for the network.
Long-Term Vision: ZK-EVM and Blobs as the Foundation of the Future
In the medium and long term, Ethereum development will focus on increasing data availability through blob technology and implementing ZK-EVM (Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine).
The PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling) project aims to achieve data transfer throughput of 8 MB/s, enabling verifiers to check block integrity directly without downloading the full data volume. This will significantly reduce bandwidth requirements for network participants, making participation more accessible.
Buterin’s strategy demonstrates that Ethereum scaling is not a one-time upgrade but a continuous evolution, balancing short-term performance with long-term reliability. Each phase is carefully planned to enhance network capabilities without compromising decentralization and security.
