Energy Crisis | Hungary Gradually Halts Natural Gas Supply to Ukraine Starting Today
Hungary and Ukraine continue to escalate their energy dispute. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on Wednesday that Hungary will gradually cease natural gas shipments to Ukraine starting that day.
Szijjarto stated that Europe is about to face an unprecedented energy crisis. Currently, Europe’s natural gas storage facilities are filled to 9%, while Hungary’s storage is at 24%. In the coming period, Hungary will focus on replenishing its gas reserves and will gradually stop sending natural gas to Ukraine from Wednesday.
Szijjarto accused Ukraine of not only blocking oil supplies to Hungary but also attempting to cut off Hungary’s natural gas supply by attacking the TurkStream pipeline recently.
Ukraine’s attack on Russian oil facilities has caused one oil pipeline to halt operations, preventing oil from being supplied via the pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Hungary will gradually stop sending natural gas to Ukraine until the Druzhba pipeline, which connects Russia to Central Europe, resumes oil supplies.
Russia stated that after Ukraine claimed to have launched a large-scale drone attack on Tuesday, Russia shot down 398 drones overnight. Due to Ukraine’s drone attacks, damage to a major oil pipeline, and the detention of some Russian oil tankers, at least 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity is currently halted.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhy threatened that if the Hungarian government continues to stop natural gas exports, the only consequence would be that Hungary’s economy would suffer losses exceeding $1 billion. Last year, Hungary earned a significant income through oil pipeline exports.
