Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement on Friday that three cargo ships of different nationalities, after being warned by the Guard Corps Navy, were forced to turn back from the Strait of Hormuz. The Guard Corps also announced that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, and any transit through the waterway will face harsh measures.

The statement said that U.S. President Trump falsely claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is open, but the three cargo ships of different nationalities have been driven away by Iran’s navy, the Strait of Hormuz has also been shut, and ships “coming from or heading to” ports of American and Israeli ally countries are prohibited from passing.

Trump had previously said that Iran would allow 10 tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz, as a “gift” to the United States.

Pole Star Global, a maritime intelligence organization, analyst said the U.S. Navy’s plan to escort in the Strait of Hormuz is not geographically feasible. The narrow strait, only 21 miles long, turns any ship that passes through it into a live target. With ships flying Western flags having essentially already left the area, ships related to Iran, China, and India are still trying to get through.
