OpenAI Expands Bug Bounty Focus to AI Misuse

The Bug Bounty Program, launched earlier this week, invites security and safety researchers to identify design or implementation flaws that could lead to real-world harm, data exposure, or system manipulation. This program will complement OpenAI’s existing security bounty framework by targeting abuse specific to AI systems, even when they don’t meet the criteria for safety vulnerabilities.

The reported issues must present a clear, repeatedly demonstrated risk, typically occurring half the time under the same conditions. The host company stated that submissions must include a solution with recommended steps to effectively address the identified risks.

Bug Program Targets Real-World Risk and System Abuse

OpenAI is focusing on protecting proprietary system information, such as model behavior and internal processes, from unintentional exposure. Although general content policies are excluded, the private company may still consider edge cases in which flaws could be exploited to cause real-world problems.

The host company’s security teams will review the submissions, and some reports will be routed between programs depending on the problem they address. The initiative is hosted on Bugcrowd and is also open to ethical hackers who can help identify risks across OpenAI’s active products. The program shows that OpenAI is highly aware of the safety implications of advanced AI technologies and is proactively taking effective measures to manage these threats.
