Throughout the night I had 3 people come up to me and commend my father. Without going into too much detail, he stood up against the sexual themed books that were circulating ~4 years ago in public school libraries as well as the transgender bathroom policies, in a tangible way. What he did laid the groundwork for this stance to be taken around the state. I heard things like “.1% of men actually stand up, and your Dad stood up. This is what we need more of”, “you won the lottery with your father, you need to be the same way”, “my Dad is my hero, but your Dad has my respect more than anyone else”, “not only did your Dad take a stand, but your Mom supported him”, etc. I got extended 2 open invitations to ask for any type of help I ever needed with the promise of help in any way they could, I got a 20 minute lesson on business from the founder of one of if not the most liquid bank in the US throughout the 80’s interest rate hikes, I got offered a job by an asset manager w $500m AUM and told “I better be your first call, I have a spot for you if you change your mind on law school”, I got told that if I ever ever run for anything “I would be your biggest supporter” and many other forms of compliments, gestures of gratitude, and vocal support. I say all of this because it has nothing to do with me. Many of these people I have not talked to in 2-5 years. Yes they saw me grow up and I’m sure they can tell that I truly look up to and respect and am trying to be like my Father, but these hands reached out simply bc of the kind of men they know my Grandfather and father are. They assume the apple does not fall far from the tree. This of course was a double edged sword growing up bc I always had to be on my best behavior bc “I represent the family”, but the benefits have far outweighed the cost. Yes some of it had to do with me graduating from a decent college and having the paper to prove I’m not stupid, yes I am a good people person and can hold a conversation with anyone, but 90% of it came because of goodwill built up by my Father and grandfather. The type of men to do what they say they are going to. The type of men to not compromise their morals for anything. The type of men to stand up for what is right even when it’s more comfortable not to. These things bring a level of respect and honor to our last name that money could not ever purchase. I encourage you to think long and hard before ever blowing your good will, social capital, honor, trust and the respect that has been built up behind your name. If you have not emphasized building these things in your life, I encourage you to start doing so. These characteristics WILL outlast you. These characteristics will benefit your progeny and their progeny if you teach it them to emphasize these characteristics. In a nation that is incredibly money hungry and money focused, trust and honor will be some of the last remaining moats. I am incredibly proud to bear the last name that I do and I plan to only expand upon the greatness it already represents.
