Meta's strategic major shift: Zuckerberg personally oversees AI projects, a $600 billion bet on a new track

【Blockbeat】On December 10th, there were leaks suggesting that Meta has been making big moves recently. They invested hundreds of billions of dollars to assemble the most expensive R&D team in tech history. Mark Zuckerberg is now mostly immersed in the laboratory, personally overseeing an AI project that can generate direct revenue.

It is reported that they have an internal model codenamed “Avocado,” which is scheduled to go live in spring 2026. Interestingly, this time they might not open source it—Meta plans to firmly retain control and sell access rights. This move is a 180-degree turn for them, as they have always promoted open-source principles.

Zuckerberg has devoted most of his energy to a core team called TBD Lab. This team is quite aggressive when training Avocado, directly using Google’s Gemma, OpenAI’s tools, and even Alibaba’s Qwen. It seems they are determined to create something different.

In terms of resource allocation, Meta is also undergoing a major reshuffle. Budgets for the metaverse and VR sectors have been significantly cut, with funds shifted toward hardware products like AI glasses. Even more aggressively, they announced that they will invest $600 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States over the next three years. This posture indicates they are going all-in on artificial intelligence.

Zuckerberg is really getting desperate this time, changing from an open-source fighter to a closed-source money hoarder, it's quite ironic. Wait, can Avocado really beat GPT-4? This integrated approach doesn't seem reliable. Spending hundreds of billions again, this bet is quite aggressive. Let's see if it can turn around by 2026. Combining all models to win? I doubt it, it has a bit of drinking poison to quench thirst feeling. Not open-sourcing is a very aggressive move, fans will be disappointed. The name Avocado is excellent, is it a pun or some other meaning? Zuckerberg stuck in the lab must be all-in, OpenAI needs to keep a close eye.

Zuckerberg is finally going to sell AI, but it seems the previous open-source approach was just a gimmick. The open-source philosophy has been broken, indeed. Avocado sounds good, but I'm worried it might just be a PowerPoint dream. Investing hundreds of billions to really beat OpenAI? I doubt it. This time, not open-sourcing makes it more interesting, indicating that making money is the real goal. How powerful can something be that is assembled from a bunch of models? Launching in spring 2026? Who will remember after waiting that long?

Zuckerberg's recent move really reverses course. He used to promote open source vigorously, and now he's directly going closed source to sell permissions. It's hilarious. Is Avocado coming? Integrating Google, OpenAI, Alibaba's technologies—Is this really about breaking the game or just another unfinished project? Spending hundreds of billions of dollars, if there's no movement by 2026, Meta's wallet will be crying. Open source to closed source—this is just the typical tactic of changing stance when there's profit to be made. Classic big tech company playbook. Integrating so many companies' technologies, the name Avocado isn't too bad. Just thinking about the money.

Zuckerberg is really desperate this time. Spending hundreds of billions just to make money, completely abandoning the open-source philosophy. Instead of open-sourcing, they sell permissions? That's a really quick turnaround; all the previous statements were meaningless. Avocado is piecing together stuff from Google, OpenAI, Alibaba—this is their secret weapon? That's a bit far-fetched. TBD Lab's team is indeed ruthless, but can a combined attack beat ChatGPT? I'm a bit skeptical. It's another 2026 projection. These kinds of promises are always missed; let's wait and see the follow-up. Zuckerberg personally stepping in to oversee indicates that Meta is really going all-in this time.
