【Chain Wen】Is Southeast Asia’s aviation industry about to play with stablecoins? The parent company of Asia Airlines, Capital A, recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia to develop a stablecoin pegged to the Malaysian Ringgit.
This is actually quite interesting. Just a few days ago, a royal family member in Malaysia announced plans to issue a similar token, and now Asia Airlines is following suit. According to a statement released on Friday, they will develop and test this project through the Digital Asset Innovation Center approved by Bank Negara Malaysia.
The division of responsibilities is quite clear: Standard Chartered will be responsible for issuing, and Capital A might be the first to pilot wholesale scenarios. For Tony Fernandes’ company, the founder of Asia Airlines, this is the first serious engagement with regulated digital assets.
Traditional airlines + established banks + regulatory sandbox — this combination is quite stable. Whether it can truly be implemented remains to be seen in the follow-up.
