Japan Might Truly Be Moving Toward Tightening

On Saturday, Japan’s Finance Minister made a statement saying that the government and the central bank have no significant disagreements. While this may seem routine, at this moment in time, it subtly hints that the government will not obstruct the central bank’s rate hikes.

The market generally expects that the Bank of Japan’s meeting next week may raise interest rates from around 0.5% to 0.75%. If this happens, it will be another clear signal of tightening. Interestingly, this Finance Minister was originally a dovish advocate, supporting monetary easing. His current shift in stance indicates that Japan’s top policymakers have reached a consensus on tightening policies.

How much impact could this have on the market? Consider these points:

The yen will continue to appreciate. Traders engaging in yen arbitrage should be cautious, as the era of cheap financing might be coming to an end. Strategies that leverage yen to invest in other assets will see their yields compressed.

Japanese asset valuations are set for adjustment. In recent years, near-zero interest rates have kept the prices of Japanese stocks and bonds suppressed. Once interest rates rise, re-pricing becomes inevitable.

Asian liquidity may fluctuate. As Asia’s largest developed economy, Japan’s policy shift will influence funding conditions across the region. This will also impact the volatility of mainstream cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, FIL, and LUNA.

After so many years of ultra-loose monetary policy, Japan is finally changing course. Are you already adjusting your position strategies?

The yen carry trade is about to cool down; the leveraged positions held need to be reduced quickly.

The yen appreciating is a problem now. How can arbitrage trading still be played? Should have taken action earlier.

Be careful with the recent yen appreciation; friends who got caught in a carry trade liquidation are probably going to cry.

Will the recent yen appreciation dampen arbitrage trading? It feels like the whole of Asia will shake... The money in the crypto circle probably can't escape either.

With the recent yen appreciation, those who borrowed yen should be liquidated, right? Previously, these arbitrage opportunities indeed went too far...
