However, a closer examination of actual consumer sentiment reveals a more nuanced picture. According to CNBC’s All-America Economic Survey, while 41% of Americans indicate they plan to reduce holiday spending this year—with 46% of those citing inflation as the primary reason—the data doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for a discount-focused retailer like Costco.

The survey also found that 61% of consumers report prices are climbing faster than their wage growth, creating particular pressure on lower-income households. This widespread affordability squeeze, paradoxically, could work in Costco’s favor rather than against it.

Where High Spenders Are Shopping

The key insight emerges when analyzing consumer spending patterns by income level. While average holiday spending hovers around $1,016 per shopper, consumers planning above-average expenditures—those targeting $1,199 or more—demonstrate notably different shopping behavior. According to CNBC reporting, this affluent consumer segment shows significantly higher propensity to patronize warehouse clubs and value-oriented retailers like Costco.

The economics are straightforward: Costco’s business model depends on membership fee revenue to generate most of its profitability, with merchandise sold at deliberately compressed margins. During periods of consumer price sensitivity, the warehouse model becomes increasingly attractive to both budget-conscious shoppers seeking bargains and higher-income consumers optimizing their spending power.

Valuation Reality Check

Admittedly, Costco’s current valuation at 47 times earnings cannot be characterized as bargain territory. The stock trades at a substantial premium to broader market multiples, which justifies some of the caution Wall Street is expressing.

Yet this valuation premium reflects Costco’s demonstrated business resilience and competitive moat. The evidence from current consumer research suggests the company may be better positioned for this holiday season than Roth Capital’s downgrade implies. Both price-sensitive shoppers responding to inflation pressures and affluent consumers seeking efficiency appear likely to increase their warehouse club visits during peak shopping months.

Investment Implications

Dismissing Costco’s investment case purely on the basis of one research firm’s downgrade would be premature, especially when underlying consumer data points to strengthening demand tailwinds from multiple customer segments. The market reaction today may represent overcorrection to the timing and tone of the downgrade rather than fundamental deterioration in the company’s competitive position.
