Core Characteristics and Industrial Uses of Palladium

Palladium is a rare precious metal with stable chemical properties and relatively high hardness. It is mainly used in automotive catalytic converters, electronic products, dental materials, and metal alloys. Among these, the automotive industry accounts for the largest share, reaching 80%-85%. As an excellent catalyst, palladium can effectively reduce emissions from internal combustion engines, which determines its long-term demand trend.

Compared to similar precious metals, palladium and platinum look similar but differ in hardness. Currently, the global market prices are ranked as: gold > palladium > platinum. The name “palladium” originates from the Roman goddess of wisdom, Pallas, symbolizing the importance of this metal.

Supply Under Pressure, Demand Growth — The Fundamental Dilemma of Palladium

Over the past 20 years, palladium prices have generally trended upward with fluctuations, but the supply side faces multiple pressures. Russia, the world’s largest palladium producer, has seen its reserves decline continuously. South Africa, the second-largest producer, has experienced production declines due to strikes and other factors, directly constraining global supply.

Between 2000 and 2015, palladium prices fluctuated around the breakeven point of cost and demand, mostly hovering in the $500-$600 range. After 2015, driven by loose monetary policies, palladium surged from over $400 to above $2800, an astonishing increase. The 2019 pandemic caused prices to drop nearly 50% rapidly, but subsequent “market rescue” measures by the Federal Reserve pushed prices higher again.

With the Federal Reserve’s rate hike cycle, palladium’s glory days are over. In the first half of 2023, prices remained volatile and declined from around $1800 at the start of the year to $1400, then rebounded slightly to around $1645 before facing renewed pressure. Expectations of a US recession and the lack of new positive catalysts have dimmed the demand outlook for palladium.

Market Expectations and Price Outlook

According to data from consulting firm MetalsFocus, the palladium market in 2023 will experience the largest deficit in years, reaching 707,000 ounces, the highest since 2018. However, the supply shortage has not effectively supported price increases.

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) forecasted that in 2023, the average price of palladium would fall 14.3% year-over-year to $1809.80. Predictions from precious metals service providers are more varied, suggesting prices could fluctuate between $1300 and $2250 per ounce. As palladium prices stay high, the substitution effect of platinum will accelerate further.

Advantages and Characteristics of Investing in Palladium

Inflation Hedge Tool: Priced in USD, palladium can provide effective asset protection when the dollar depreciates. Weak dollar typically drives up palladium prices.

Supply-Demand Mismatch Opportunities: Rapid growth in the automotive industry boosts demand, while limited mine capacity constrains supply. This structural imbalance theoretically supports higher prices.

Volatility Advantage: Compared to gold and silver, the smaller market size of palladium results in larger price swings, offering more profit opportunities for active investors.

Correlation Performance: Over the past decade, palladium has shown a high correlation with gold, often surpassing gold in gains. Although short-term deviations may occur, the long-term trend remains aligned.

Comparison of Palladium Investment Methods

Spot Palladium: Offers physical security but faces wear and depreciation risks, with higher storage costs.

Futures Contracts: Have relatively fixed trading specifications and delivery dates, limiting flexibility. They require higher capital thresholds and have limited scope for contract specification adjustments.

CFD (Contract for Difference): Requires a low minimum of 0.01 lots, allows 24-hour trading without delivery deadlines, supports both long and short positions with leverage, and offers flexible contract specifications. Investors profit from price fluctuations without owning the physical metal. Trading costs mainly include bid-ask spreads and overnight fees.

Investment Decision Recommendations

Palladium vs Platinum: Based on supply and demand fundamentals, palladium’s large demand and tight supply make it more suitable for investors. However, platinum has slightly better liquidity, while palladium’s smaller scale results in relatively weaker liquidity, which is a risk factor to consider.

For Beginners: Clarify your investment goals—whether seeking profit, risk hedging, or long-term holding. Different goals require different strategies; choosing the wrong one may lead to regret. Also, closely monitor overseas markets, understand international fee structures, and be aware of trading time differences to seize timely investment opportunities.

When analyzing palladium trends, besides fundamental analysis, technical indicators such as moving average crossovers(MACD) and relative strength index(RSI) can assist in judging buy and sell signals. A death cross in MACD (short-term crossing below long-term) suggests selling, while a golden cross indicates buying. Setting appropriate stop-loss and take-profit levels and strictly controlling risks are key to successful trading.
