Privacy may seem simple, but in reality, it's a dead end.
Think about real life—some things are only suitable for sharing with friends, some photos are only meant for certain people, and behaviors that don't matter today might be something you'd want to erase ten years from now.
But the problem is, if privacy settings only have two options: either fully public or completely hidden. Most people would probably choose the latter, locking everything away.
Because compared to being forced to expose themselves, many prefer to say nothing at all. This is the current real dilemma.

Locking everything up is basically self-censorship, which is really quite ironic.

well *actually* this binary privacy model is fundamentally broken from a game theory perspective... but here's the thing—most platforms don't even try granular access control because it tanks engagement metrics. they'd rather you panic-lock everything than optimize for genuine selective disclosure. kinda defeats the purpose tho ngl

This is exactly the current dilemma of the internet, with no room for maneuver.

Might as well hide everything, since there aren't many people really interested in listening anyway.

In a word, it's just being pushed into a corner, so might as well shut up.

Just lock it all up; anyway, someone will mine no matter what you say.

Just hide everything completely; anyway, the platform doesn't understand fine-grained control.

Being visible means being recorded; that feeling of being unable to delete anything is truly unbeatable.

These days, it's either black or white; the gray area in between is completely gone.
