Recently acquired a CLONE X NFT as my profile picture, but friends generally prefer the previous one. Upon reflection, there's indeed an issue with this avatar set—dark backgrounds combined with dark character designs, which become blurry and hard to distinguish when scaled down, significantly reducing overall recognizability. This problem is especially obvious when displayed on social media and wallets; in small thumbnail sizes, it easily "blurs" together.

Many NFT enthusiasts have encountered similar frustrations. No matter how exquisite the avatar design is, if the display effects at different sizes aren't considered, it’s hard to showcase effectively in daily use. CLONE X indeed needs to optimize this aspect—high contrast and clear outlines are essential to maintain recognizability when scaled down.

Web3ers, have you encountered this situation? How did you choose?

Damn, this is exactly the point I've been wanting to complain about. CLONE X's design is indeed a bit disappointing. Dark colors on dark backgrounds, who came up with this? The small images make it hard to see the facial features clearly. I'm now leaning towards choosing high-contrast ones. No matter how fancy, I need to be able to see clearly. Changing my avatar and being asked ten times "Why did you change your avatar?" is not worth it. Actually, this isn't just a problem with CLONE X. Many high-end PFPs have fallen into this trap. It seems that truly good avatar design should consider practicality, not just aesthetics.

Haha, I also fell for the CLONE X trap. When I pressed the small image, it all blurred out. Honestly, how did the designer not think of this? Dark on dark—how uncreative can they be? High-contrast avatars are still the most popular; you can recognize them at a glance in your wallet. Nowadays, even NFT avatars have to consider "usability." But speaking of which, CLONE X should have fixed this issue long ago. Now I prioritize bold outlines; blurry ones are really a freebie. Fortunately, friends gave feedback, or else I’d have been stuck with blurry images all the time. In Web3, these small details often determine your avatar’s "survivability."

According to the white paper, this is actually an issue of NFT design failing to effectively communicate information. It is worth noting that scale invariance has not been incorporated into the governance framework in the metaverse scenario. This is similar to a DAO voting system not considering the voices of small token holders—no matter how perfect the design is, the user experience will directly collapse. The CLONE X team needs to remedy this. From the data performance, NFTs with low avatar recognizability indeed have reduced liquidity, and this hypothesis has already been confirmed by on-chain holding data. Forget it, I’ll stick with the old avatar anyway, since the novelty only lasts a few days. What does this design flaw indicate? It shows that during DAO governance, genuine users were not involved in product iteration proposals.

I'll say it directly, the issue with dark backgrounds being all the same is really disgusting, and the small images are just useless. The CLONE X design is overly idealistic, and it’s not practical in real use. Haha, in the end, it’s probably because the designers haven’t looked at their work in a mobile wallet. Profile pictures need high contrast, so you can recognize someone at a glance even in small images, otherwise what's the point? Honestly, compared to prettiness, I care more about recognizability. How do you choose? Anyway, I’ve switched back; a bright background is the way to go. Good-looking but impractical, this is a common problem in NFTs.

Haha, this is the real NFT experience. It looks one way when you buy it, and another after it's on the chain. Not just CLONE X, it seems most PFP series have this problem. Do the designers never look at 192x192 preview images? Instead of optimizing, why not just release a high-contrast version directly? After all, it all ends up being secondary creation.
