Belarusian Leader Lands in N. Korea for Two-Day Visit
(MENAFN) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko touched down in North Korea Wednesday, embarking on his first-ever official state visit to the reclusive East Asian nation.
Lukashenko was received at Pyongyang International Airport by North Korean First Vice Premier Kim Tok-hun and Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, according to a Belarusian state news agency.
A sweeping bilateral friendship and cooperation agreement is expected to be signed between Lukashenko and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un before the two-day visit concludes, Ryzhenkov told reporters at the airport.
“The time has come to more actively develop our relations. There are a whole range of areas of interest to both Belarus and North Korea. These are all reflected in the relevant friendship treaty that our leaders will sign. And based on this treaty, we will develop contacts between relevant ministries and agencies,” Ryzhenkov was quoted as saying.
Beyond the landmark friendship treaty — which Ryzhenkov described as “fundamental” — the two nations are expected to formalize a total of ten separate agreements throughout the visit, collectively designed to strengthen the legal architecture underpinning Belarusian-North Korean bilateral cooperation.
Lukashenko’s Pyongyang trip was formally announced Tuesday by the Belarusian presidency, which confirmed the visit was being made at Kim Jong Un’s personal invitation.
The diplomatic overture traces back to September of last year, when Kim extended an open invitation to Lukashenko to visit Pyongyang “at any convenient time” — a conversation that took place on the sidelines of a military parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
