Just updated my SASSA banking details and cellphone number last week, so let me share what actually works because the process can be confusing if you don't know what you're doing.
If you're on the R350 SRD grant and need to change your banking details, the good news is it's all online now. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS to your registered phone. Click it, add your new bank account info, and you're done. The bank verification takes a few days to a couple weeks, so don't panic if it doesn't show up immediately. Just make sure the account is in your name only – SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.
Changing your cellphone number is actually just as important because that's how they send you the verification codes and payment notifications. Same portal, enter your ID and Application ID, add the new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. Pretty straightforward if you use the official link. There are sketchy unofficial sites out there claiming they can do this, so don't fall for that – always use the real SASSA website.
Now, if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability and need to update banking details, that's different. You can't do that online – you have to actually go to your local SASSA office in person with your ID and a recent bank statement (not older than three months). They'll fill out the Payment Method Change Form, send it to the bank, and it takes up to 21 working days to process. If you submit before the 15th of the month, it should kick in for next month's payment. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.
For cellphone updates on permanent grants, you can try calling the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 first, but honestly, visiting the office is usually more reliable because they can verify everything properly. Yeah, it's a bit of a hassle, but it beats having your grant payments mess up because your details are outdated.
The whole point is keeping your information current so payments don't get delayed or rejected. I've seen people wait months because they didn't update their stuff in time. So if you're thinking about doing it, just do it now rather than waiting until something goes wrong.
