Just spent way too much time digging through housing data and found some legit hidden gems if you're looking for affordable places to live without crazy crime rates. Turns out Ohio is absolutely loaded with these towns - like 7 of the top options are there, which is wild.
The cheapest I found is New Philadelphia, Ohio - you're looking at around $186k for a house and only like $1,100/month mortgage. Violent crime is super low at 0.69 per 1,000 people. New Ulm, Minnesota is another solid pick if you want something even safer (0.29 violent crime rate) but the homes run a bit higher at $222k.
What caught me off guard is how many of these safest cities actually have decent populations. San Elizario, Texas has the lowest home prices at $167k, and the crime stats there are insanely good. Then you've got places like Edwardsville, Illinois and Trenton, Michigan that feel like they'd be way more expensive based on livability scores but they're still pretty reasonable.
If you're seriously considering a move to somewhere more affordable, these cheapest and safest places seem worth checking out. Most of them have annual living costs under $45k which is pretty wild. The data they used was solid too - FBI crime stats, Census data, actual Zillow home values from early 2025. Not just random guesses.
