Major Ethereum Pectra update: key changes and potential market volatility

What is Pectra and when will it be released?
Ethereum is preparing for a major update Pectra (Prague-Electra), aimed at improving scalability, security, and user convenience. The launch is scheduled for May 7, 2025, and testing has already been conducted on the test networks Sepolia and Holesky.

Key innovations:

1. Account abstraction (EIP-7702)

- Ordinary wallets (EOA) will be able to function as smart accounts: pay fees in any tokens, use multi-signatures, and social recovery.
- This will simplify interaction with DeFi, NFTs, and games.

2. Changes for validators (EIP-7251)

- The maximum staking limit will increase from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, which is convenient for large validators but may enhance centralization.

3. Reducing fees and speeding up transactions (EIP-7691 and EIP-7623)

- Improvements for Layer-2 solutions will make transactions faster and cheaper.

4. Simplification for Developers (EIP-7549)

- Optimizing the deployment of smart contracts and validator voting will enhance the stability of the network.

5. Long-term improvements

- PeerDAS, Verkle trees, and automatic reward reinvestment will make Ethereum more scalable and efficient.

Why is this important?

Pectra makes Ethereum more user-friendly for users and developers:
- For users, fees will decrease, transactions will speed up, and wallets will become more functional.
- For developers, the creation of dApps will be simplified, which will accelerate the development of DeFi, NFT, and games.

Risks and potential issues

- Centralization due to the increase in staking limit.
- The difficulties of implementing EIP-7702 for developers.
- Technical risks – possible bugs after launch.

Pectra and the market: prepare for volatility

Analysts note that volatility in ETH/BTC may sharply increase before the update:
- The Bollinger Bands on the ETH-BTC chart have narrowed to a minimum since June 2020, which usually precedes sharp movements.
- The update will increase activity in Ethereum, especially in Layer-2 and DeFi, which may affect the price.

Withdrawal

Pectra is an important step towards the mass adoption of Ethereum. Users will receive convenient features, while the market may experience a surge in volatility. Stay tuned for updates and be ready for changes!
