1984: Control through fear, force, and falsehood Orwell describes a system where power is maintained by: Fear with constant threat (surveillance, punishment) Force via state violence and coercion Falsehood (Truth social) official lies replacing reality Central authority where Trump is the unquestionable source of truth This is totalitarian, centralized, and inescapable. Donald Trump attacks institutional truth His frequent claims of “fake news” Delegitimization of media, courts, and elections Surely similar to Orwell’s idea of undermining objective reality Us vs them framing Political opponents portrayed as existential threats Loyalty emphasized over neutrality which echoes Orwellian binary thinking Emotional politics We see fear, anger, grievance used as mobilising tools Emotion prioritized over deliberation
