Seven years in the crypto world: from 60,000 to 5 million, risk control is my faith
Spring 2018, my small restaurant went bankrupt. The entrepreneurial dream was completely shattered at that moment, leaving only 60,000 in my bank account, which was my only life-saving money. The landlord kept knocking on the door demanding rent, and my parents’ eyes were full of disappointment. I curled up in the rented house scrolling through my phone when I suddenly saw a Bitcoin news—this message pulled me out of the depths of despair.
In a major exchange, I hesitated for seven days, repeatedly confirming the trading process. In the end, I went all in, investing all my savings—6,000 each—to buy 9 Bitcoins. At that time, I only had one thought: I must turn things around with this.
The next two years were like a roller coaster. In 2018, the bull market suddenly arrived, and my account balance soared to 900,000. Watching the constantly jumping balance on the screen, I was so excited that I didn’t sleep all night, even starting to fantasize about buying a house and a car.
Then 2019 came. The crash happened without any warning, and my account shrank straight down to 180,000, returning to the starting point overnight. That feeling of falling from the clouds made me truly understand what "paper wealth" means for the first time, and I also tasted the price of greed.
What truly changed me was in 2020. After experiencing several waves of volatility, I completely changed my temper. No longer chasing gains or cutting losses impulsively, I instead put the remaining money into mining and DeFi, managing it slowly like farming.
I figured out three bottom lines: First, capital preservation always comes first; after earning 50%, I must withdraw the principal. Second, only do what I understand; if I don’t understand a white paper, I don’t touch it. Third, strictly control my position, with 60% of funds pressed on Bitcoin and Ethereum as ballast.
In 2021, I finished reading Layer2 technical documents half a year in advance. When I saw an opportunity, I heavily invested in it, and since then, I never made the mistake of overtrading again.
Over three years, the account balance gradually grew to 5 million. Not only did I pay off the debts from my startup, but I also bought a big house for my parents. After seven years, my deepest realization is: the most valuable thing in the crypto world is never advanced technical analysis, but patience to survive. Earning money slowly is more reliable than getting rich overnight, and not losing money is already a form of making money.
I have organized my trading notes and some practical experience over the years. Welcome to exchange ideas together, hoping to help you avoid some pitfalls.
